Shiro Wot | Ethiopian Spiced Chickpea Stew

Shiro Wot is a creamy, protein-rich Ethiopian/Eritrean stew made from finely ground chickpeas and a blend of warm, aromatic spices. Naturally gluten-free and packed with flavor, it’s a nourishing comfort food enjoyed with injera or rice.

 

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Jeblo Shiro Powder
  • 1 tbsp Jeblo Berbere (optional, for heat)
  • 2 tbsp niter kibbeh (spiced butter) or cooking oil of your choice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2–3 cups water (adjust for thickness)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat niter kibbeh or oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add Jeblo Shiro powder and stir to coat the onions.
  4. Gradually pour in water, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  5. Add Berbere if desired for extra heat.
  6. Simmer for 10–15 minutes until thick and creamy.
  7. Serve with injera or rice.
