Misir Wot | Ethiopian Spicy Red Lentil Stew

Misir Wot | Ethiopian Spicy Red Lentil Stew

Misir Wot is a comforting Ethiopian red lentil stew made with slow-cooked onions, Berbere, and tender red lentils. It’s naturally vegan, gluten-free, and full of flavor that feels warm and familiar.

A small pinch of Mekelesha is often added at the end in many Ethiopian homes. It softens the heat, adds depth, and brings a gentle warmth that ties everything together. It’s a simple finishing touch that makes the dish feel more traditional and complete.

Ingredients

1 cup red lentils, rinsed well
2 tbsp Jeblo Berbere
2 tbsp niter kibbeh (spiced butter) or your preferred cooking oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
3 cups water or vegetable broth
½ to 1 tsp Jeblo Mekelesha (optional traditional finishing spice)
Salt, to taste

Instructions

Heat niter kibbeh or oil over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until soft.

Stir in Jeblo Berbere and toast for 1 minute.

Add the rinsed lentils and coat them with the spices.

Pour in the water or broth. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 20–25 minutes until creamy and tender.

Add Jeblo Mekelesha at the end for a warm, traditional finish.

Season with salt to taste. Serve with injera, rice, or flatbread.
